IGM Annual Conference 2023
The importance of the agricultural sector in the Mozambican economy, its potential to help move people out of poverty, and its vulnerability to the effects of weather shocks and climate change, place it among key policy areas in the country. However, despite its transformative potential, agricultural development has been stagnant during the last decades. Agricultural productivity remains low and related value chains are underdeveloped, leading to agro-processing industries playing only a marginal role in adding value to agricultural products and local produce being unable to compete with imports, especially in urban consumption markets.
The IGM 2023 Annual Conference, Agricultural development in Mozambique: trends, challenges and opportunities, organized on 8 November 2023 in Maputo, Mozambique, aims to shed light on recent developments in the agricultural sector in Mozambique and discuss initiatives to enhance the productivity and resilience of smallholder farmers in terms of mitigating the effects of climate change. The event is organized in partnership between the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the Center for Economic and Management Studies (CEEG) at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), the University of Copenhagen (UCPH-DERG) and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).
The conference will bring together national and international academics, policymakers, practitioners, and representatives of the agricultural sector to discuss the dynamics of the agricultural and forestry sectors in Mozambique and their contribution to sustainable development in the face of present and future challenges, including the effects of climate change.
The conference is structured around four thematic sessions, with two sessions dedicated to studies carried out under the Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme, with a view to producing a comprehensive report on the status of smallholder agriculture in Mozambique. The following sessions include recent research by other partners and papers selected through the IGM Call for Papers 2023.
The conference will be held in a hybrid format. The sessions will be broadcast live via Zoom and video recordings and photos of the in-person event will be used for publicity purposes after the event.
The conference languages will be Portuguese and English. There will be simultaneous Portuguese-English-Portuguese translation.
Please note that the in-person event will be by invitation letter only. However, the online event is open to everyone.
