IGM Annual Conference 2022
The Mozambican private sector has been under significant pressure since 2016. Factors negatively affecting its performance include terrorism in Cabo Delgado, Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently, the Ukrainian conflict and its impact on commodity prices and inflation.
How is the Mozambican private sector doing today? What are the main constraints faced by local firms and how have they managed to cope with these external shocks? These are some of the questions raised during the IGM Annual Conference 2022, ‘Private sector dynamics and well-being in Mozambique’, held on 8 November 2022 in Maputo, Mozambique. Coordinated by the Centre for Economic and Management Studies (CEEG) of the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM). The event will bring together local and international academics and development practitioners to discuss recent research on the performance of the private sector in Mozambique, on tendencies in the local labour market, and on the determinants of economic growth and well-being in the country. A special focus will be given to manufacturing sector enterprises, which are seen as potential motors for structural change and for diversifying the economy away from capital-intensive projects and low-productivity subsistence agriculture.
The conference is structured around four thematic sessions with two of the first sessions being dedicated to the preliminary results of the Mozambican Manufacturing Enterprise Survey (IIM 2022) implemented under the IGM programme. The third and fourth sessions include papers selected through the IGM Call for Papers 2022 and by current PhD students at the Faculty of Economics of UEM. The event culminates with a panel discussion on the policy implications of the presented research.
The conference will be held in a hybrid format. The sessions will be live-streamed via Zoom and the video recordings and photos of the in-person event will be used for dissemination purposes after the event.
The conference languages will be Portuguese and English. Simultaneous interpretation Portuguese-English-Portuguese will be available.
