MID Seminar Series

The MID Seminar Series offers a forum for the presentation and in-depth discussion of thematic studies and results developed as part of the Mozambique Institutional Diagnostic (MID) study. Elaborated by key specialists in their fields, the topics covered by the studies include decentralization, education, natural resources, and the rule of law in Mozambique.

Launched in June 2019 by the Inclusive growth in Mozambique programme, the Mozambique Institutional Diagnostic (MID) study is a unique collaboration between various international research institutions, including the University of Copenhagen, UNU-WIDER, and Oxford Policy Management (OPM), and local high-level analysts. The study explores the relationship between the characteristics and functioning of Mozambican institutions and the economic performance of the country. The key goal of the study is to produce an institutional diagnostic tool that allows policymakers to identify institutional weaknesses that constrain economic development and indicates possible directions for reforms and change.

The MID study is part of the international research programme Economic Development and Institutions (EDI) funded by UK Goverment through UK aid and managed by Oxford Policy Management (OPM).

The draft report of the MID study, consisting of two background papers, nine thematic studies, and a synthesis, was presented and discussed at a public forum held on 4 November 2020 in Maputo. The nine thematic studies included in the draft report are also published as WIDER Working Papers.

The seminars will take place in Maputo on four consecutive Wednesday afternoons in November and the beginning of December 2020 at a venue to be announced.

Each seminar will feature a 45-minute presentation followed by a moderated Q&A session for discussion. Coffee and tea will be served after the seminar.

The current national requirements related to the prevention of COVID-19 limit participation to a maximum of 40 people. Those interested in joining a session are requested to register beforehand to secure their place. The registration links will be published separately ahead of each event

The seminars will be in Portuguese.
