Public Forum - Is technical and vocational education and training a solution for youth unemployment?
On 24 June 2021, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Mozambique (MITSS) launches the final report of the Survey on the School-to-Work Transition of Technical and Vocational Training Graduates in Mozambique.
The report, produced under the Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme in collaboration with the National Directorate of the Labour Market Observatory (DNOMT) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MITSS) and with the support of the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment (SEJE) and the National Vocational Education Authority (ANEP), analyses the dynamics of the transition into the world of work of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates in Mozambique.
The survey is based on a longitudinal study that followed more than 1,600 Mozambican final-year TVET students for a period of over a year in 2019-2020. The survey was carried out in two phases: the baseline was implemented in October-November 2019 through a field survey reaching 20 public, private and community TVET schools in five provinces of the country. The second phase, implemented between January and November 2020, included four rounds of follow-up telephone interviews of the same sample.
The research was carried out by a team of researchers from the Centre for Economic
and Management Studies (CEEG) at the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), the Development Economics Research Group (DERG) at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), in close collaboration with the National Directorate of the Labour Market Observatory at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MITSS-DNOMT).
The launch event is hosted by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and takes place at the Complexo Pedagógico of the University of Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo. In addition to the presentation of the report and its key findings by Ricardo Santos, UNU-WIDER, and Gimelgo Xirinda, researcher of IGM programme, the event will include interventions by the Vice-Rector of the University of Eduardo Mondlane, the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Finland, as representative of the IGM programme donors, and the speech of the Vice-Minister of Labour and Social Security of Mozambique.
