Documenting the 2019 Social Accounting Matrix for Mozambique

This technical note describes how the 2015 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Mozambique was updated. New Household Budget Survey data availability, changes in the economic structure as captured by the underlying Supply and Use Tables and National Accounts as well as the frequency of previous SAM utilization indicates the relevance of an update.

A new SAM has been prepared for the year 2019, which is a more normal year than 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recession later in the year. Subsequent work will make use of the SAM in analytical and descriptive studies.

SAM data is used to analyse the economic structure and to provide basic information for economy-wide models such as SAM multiplier models and computable general equilibrium models. These types of models are suitable to simulate macroeconomic policies and analyse their economic and distributional effects. The latter effects could, for example, be measured across types of labour force and income size family groups.
