CEEG Seminar Series: Economic growth of Mozambique and its interaction with the environment

On Wednesday 24 August 2022, Mônica Magaua, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), will present her recent study on the economic growth in Mozambique and its interaction with the environment.

The seminar is part of the CEEG Seminar Series, organized under the Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme. The seminars offer a forum to share and discuss ongoing research on topics related to the work of the IGM programme and to foster a culture of research at the faculty and at UEM in general.

The series takes place at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM). It is a public event open to everyone. The presentation will be given in Portuguese.

About the study

Traditional economic indicators for calculating economic growth do not include environment-related components. In this study, the author uses data from Mozambique’s national accounts following recommendations of the System of Environmental Economic Accounts (SEEA) and the Handbook on statistics for economies based on natural resources to compile GVAs (Gross Value Added) and GDPs (Gross Domestic Product) adjusted for natural resource depletion for the period between 2005 and 2020. The results show that the adjusted values are 1.4% lower in comparison with the nominal values.
