On 10–13 July, the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) and the Centre for African and Development Studies (CEsA) organized a four-day conference in Lisbon, Portugal. The event, entitled ‘Towards New Rhythms of Development’, was hosted by ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management, University of Lisbon.

The Inclusive growth in Mozambique (IGM) Programme Manager Enilde Sarmento, National Director of Economic and Development Policies, Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), was invited to participate in a round table discussion organized by UNU-WIDER on 11 July on peace, jobs and social contracts. The other members of the panel were Kunal Sen, Director of UNU-WIDER, Laura Camfield, University of East Anglia, and Andy Sumner, King’s College London.

In her contribution, Director Sarmento shared insights on the current status of the Mozambican economy and on the challenges and opportunities related to economic and societal transformation in the country. Basing her presentation on research evidence produced under the IGM programme, she focused on the opportunities around transformative industries, infrastructure, and the development of human capital through the promotion of quality training and more inclusive labour market policies.
